The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal sound coming from the front passengers side of the vehicle. A dealer was contacted for an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the power transfer unit was damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
