The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that just before attempting to start the vehicle, she became aware that the brake light indicated that the parking brake was engaged was illuminated even though the parking brake was not activated. Upon starting the vehicle, the contact became aware that the parking brake was engaged and failed to release. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the Electronic Parking Brake control module. The contact was informed that there was excessive water in the rear cargo area interior panel where the EPB control module was located. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 08-060-16. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 77,000.
