Diesel (engine)
An engine design in which the fuel is ignited by heat generated in compressing air rather than by a spark plug as in a gasoline engine. Diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines, and provide more torque at lower rpm. Modern “clean diesels” meet the same emission standards as gasoline engines and require the use of ultra-low sulfur diesel (USLD) fuel which has been mandated for on-road diesels since 2007.
