GermanyA German automobile manufacturer based in Buchloe, Bavaria. The company was founded in 1965 by engineer Burkard Bovensiepen, who began by developing high-performance carburetors for the BMW 1500. The success of these solutions led to Alpina being officially recognized by BMW as a partner, and later as an independent car manufacturer, registered with the German Federal Transport Authority since 1983.
Alpina differs from ordinary tuning studios in that its cars are produced in cooperation with BMW: basic models are assembled at BMW factories, after which Alpina modifies them — installing its own engines, suspensions, interior elements and aerodynamics. This allows Alpina cars to be assigned unique VIN numbers and considered separate models, rather than modifications of BMW.
The brand’s philosophy is a combination of high performance, comfort and discreet design. Unlike the aggressive BMW M models, Alpina cars focus on everyday luxury and confident dynamics. For example, the Alpina B5 offers M5-level performance, but with a softer suspension and an elegant appearance.
The company also has a rich history in motorsports: in the 1970s, it won the European Touring Car Championship and competed in the 24 Hours of Spa. However, since the late 1980s, Alpina has focused on road models such as the B3, B7, XD3, and B8 Gran Coupe, each featuring individual engine, suspension, and interior tuning.
In 2022, BMW officially announced the acquisition of the Alpina brand in order to integrate it into its structure and maintain a unique approach to producing exclusive cars. At the same time, Alpina continues to produce models under its own name, retaining signature features such as classic multi-spoke wheels, Alpina Blue and Green colors, and hand-finished interiors in Lavalina leather.
